It was the latest shot in a turf war going back 25 years. The reason? Barca are an official PES 2020 partner club – and publisher Konami reportedly wasn’t keen for him to promote its main rival. Yet his first-round match against Eibar’s Edu Expósito never took place. If not, you can wait for a few months for a price drop on it.Earlier this year, Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto was due to compete in a charity Fifa 20 tournament, which ultimately raised almost £130,000 towards the fight against coronavirus. If you are a stickler for realism in football games, it is worth splurging on despite the fact that its starts at ₹3,999. FIFA 20 is not a huge upgrade, but it does feel different. However, by and large it feels repetitive and similar to last year’s edition in terms of how transfers, player training and matches work. Career mode gets some new elements like the option to customize your manager. Volta has got a career mode of its own, which lets gamers build a team and participate in tournaments. It is a refreshing addition to fall back on and break the monotony of the career and ultimate team modes. The story mode that was regular fixture in the last three FIFA games has been left out in FIFA 20 and has been replaced with a street football mode called Volta. Taking set pieces is going to be breezy as now gamers can choose the exact spot on the goal post where they want to shoot. While defending, players will have to put in more effort and merely pressing the tackle button won’t work. Also, the way the ball moves and interacts with the ground feels more realistic. A few elements that you notice right away is that fast paced attackers actually feel faster and won’t be outran by slow defenders anymore. While it retains the familiar look and feel of its predecessor, there are several under the hood upgrades aimed at making the gameplay more realistic. ■ Commentary is repetitive and sometimes incorrect ■ Focuses on realistic gameplay over arcade styles While PES 2020 is definitely a game worth playing, if you’re choosing between the two, FIFA will be more enjoyable. There are other pitfalls too, in how contracts work in the manager mode, inaccurate commentary, in-game user interfaces. Unless you’re a fan of realistic football, PES won’t impress you. FIFA’s arcade-like style is easier to get addicted to than PES, which is probably why FIFA outsells PES. The primary difference between FIFA and PES remains in the fact that the former takes an arcade-like approach to gameplay, while the latter is a simulation of real football. For instance, defenders fail to run towards the ball automatically and the referee’s decisions often makes no sense. The most obvious break in gameplay comes when you see the game’s artificial intelligence (AI) handle players. As far as realism is concerned, PES gets things right with its animations and accurate representation of the fluidity of football. PES 2020’s graphics are improved and the gameplay feels smoother. And that’s the right move, instead of facing the uphill battle for legal rights with a giant like EA. With PES 2020, Konami is trying to control the aspects of the game it can. For a football enthusiast, the game is more appealing simply because it can represent the real life football ecosystem accurately. EA’s tie-ups with official football clubs, brands and more allow the use of real team names, real player names, jerseys, etc. That’s primarily because Konami, the game’s publisher, hasn’t been able to acquire the rights that Electronic Arts (EA), FIFA’s publisher, has.
